uconv is *not* a drop-in replacement for iconv. Its character set mapping
tables are designed for use on IBM operating systems, not for compatibility
with the rest of the internet; see

uconv has its own merits. For example, it can be used to convert to NFC or NFD
normalization forms easily. But that does not make it a good "alternative" to
iconv.
