Most likely a transfer problem (such as: ftp without BINARY mode,
or storage on a full disk, or automatic decompression without you
being aware of it, etc.). I would look at the file sizes, and retry the
download using a different program.

PS: 27 lines of signature is just excessive, especially when writing to a
mailing list. A maximum of 5 lines of signature is usually considered OK.
