I have an unrelated and off-topic question, but I just don't know where
to seek an answer. Perhaps someone can suggest an avenue for me to
pursue.
On a redhat 9 system I recently built,
man gettext
gives me an English man page.
export LANG=fr_FR; man gettext
gives me a French man page.
I'd like to know how this magic is done.
I tested this on a RedHat 9 system, and when I queried the rpm
binary package, I only saw one set of man pages -- I did not
see language specific man pages.
Originally I thought that the gettext trick for making man
pages by running gettext.x through help2man to get gettext.1.in,
would be used over and over in different locales each time.
But I've seen code in the help2man perl script (both the latest
on the web, and the one included in the gettext cvs) that
says it suppresses locales.
I'm very curious if the localized man pages are coming
through the po message catalogs for the gettext binary,
and help2man is being fed different outputs from, eg,
export LANG=fr_FR; man gettext
export LANG=sv_FI; man gettext
etc, as I suspect, and whether that is done by a
developer at autoconfiguration time, or by the
installer at configure; make time, or at the time that
the user requests the man page, or the first time
the user requests a man page in a particular language,
or how this magic is accomplished.
Thanks for any pointers.
