FWIW, it's not very fast with Tramp. Even just visiting a local file over the 'sudo' protocol,
(benchmark 1 '(file-name-split buffer-file-name)) prints '0.013030s' here. With some random deviations based on GC.Probably not terrible for this particular command, but a general "split file name" function could do better. I think.
