I'm not sure what you're saying we should or shouldn't do.Juri's concern is that the default look lacks emphasis. It might be okay to alter it, though I'd like to avoid too radical changes.
The comment about making text harder to read that I made can apply to almost every face: adding darker background to a face where foreground is dark reduces perceived contrast, which makes text harder to real. Sometimes it's okay, but in general it's better to look for other options first rather than be forced to balance emphasis with readability.
