Hello,
update on this issue.
The reason why xclip 1.9 didn't behave correctly was that I was using a
obsolete version of wl-clipboard (1.0) while the new wl-clipboard 2.0 behaves
correctly when called by xclip.
Updating wl-clipboard to a 2.0 release solves the issue (in my case I've
installed the package from the next focal fossa 20.04 release).
Unfortunately Ubuntu 19.10 still distributes and old and broken version of
wl-clipboard.
