I tried deleting all .elc files *without* reverting that commit, and

    (custom-handle-keyword 'ido :link '(emacs-commentary-link :tag "Commentary" 
"ido.el")
                   'custom-group)

does not give me an error.  Is it possible that it was just the 'make
bootstrap' which fixed things?
