We already have `auto-mode-alist', for customization. I was talking
about the default behavior.
This is what I see in currently `auto-mode-alist' (in my setup, at
least) for `archive-mode':
("\\.oxt\\'" . archive-mode)
("\\.\\(deb\\|[oi]pk\\)\\'" . archive-mode)
