In an attempt to bisect this, I've just gone back to:

commit 94ae2ad44cfd711c836e0fbd86b9e133724482d5
Author: Stefan Monnier <monnier@iro.umontreal.ca>
Date:   Tue Nov 5 23:11:04 2013 -0500

which behaves the same, so it's unlikely to be cairo-related.

I'm starting to think this is either something in my environment or a
GTK issue.
