Any change that causes recompilation of rmail.el will thereafter cause
a failure to compile rmailmm.el:

  In toplevel form:
  lisp/mail/rmailmm.el:78:1:Error: Symbol's value as variable is void: 
rmail-spool-directory

Compilation of rmailmm.el with the Emacs binary from the emacs-24
branch succeeds with no messages.
