One caveat with the "set-fontset-font" approach is that the given font is used
unconditionally for all characters in the 'symbol ranges; if the font doesn't
contain glyphs for a certain symbol character, Emacs will display the empty box
character rather than look for an alternative font containing that character.
So this is something of a workaround, rather than a definitive solution.
