So, something like:

(defvar file-name-version-regexp
  "\\(?:~\\|\\.~[-[:alnum:]:address@hidden(~[[:digit:]]+\\)?~\\)"
  ;; The optional ~[[:digit]]+ matches relative versions in git like `HEAD~2'
  "Regular expression matching the backup/version part of a file name.
Used by `file-name-sans-versions'.")
