bug#5639: 23.1.92; Undo doesn't work

I cannot reproduce it here:

   emacs -Q
   a
   C-x u

and the "a" is removed, but the rest of the text is left intact.
Most likely there's someting in your .emacs that triggers the problem.
Please try and figure out what it is so we can either fix it or discard
as a pilot error (or a bug in some other package).
