Hello!
By comparing the pre-processed output from xterm.c in the simple case X tollkit Xaw3d I found a hint for the cause of the compile failures: the environment variable MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET was set. Unsetting it now led to a freshly compiled GNU Emacs 23.1.90! I did it with GCC 4.2. 

Hopefully the same is true for GTK+2 – and default GCC 4.0!
