Sure:

  address@hidden:/etc# git ls-files -z -o --directory --no-empty-directory 
--exclude-standard --
  address@hidden:/etc# echo $?
  0
  address@hidden:/etc# touch a
  address@hidden:/etc# git ls-files -z -o --directory --no-empty-directory 
--exclude-standard --
  address@hidden:/etc# echo foo >> inittab 
  address@hidden:/etc# # note the heading 'a' before the prompt
  address@hidden:/etc# exec git ls-files -z -o --directory --no-empty-directory 
--exclude-standard --
  address@hidden:~$ echo $?
  0
  address@hidden:~$ 

(I'm not sure the last return code is actually faithful, as I haven't
 verified whether su returns to the caller the exit code of the shell
 process.)
