It's too easy to kill an emacs-server. Consider this sequence:

$ emacs -Q --daemon
$ emacsclient -c file
C-c C-x     -- or --  C-c #
$ emacsclient -c a
emacsclient: connect: Connection refused
emacsclient: No socket or alternate editor. Please use:

The effect doesn't happen if I omit the "-c" option from emacsclient.

Unfortunately, without the "-c" option I'll get a text only (tty) client
and not a graphical one.

Your Gtk+ is too old, from emacs/etc/PROBLEMS:

** Emacs compiled with Gtk+ crashes when closing a display
(x-close-connection).

This happens because of bugs in Gtk+. Gtk+ 2.10 seems to be OK. See
bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85715.
