bug#3253: 23.0.92; Subpixel rendering slows down significantly

When activating subpixel rendering under Gnome (Ubuntu 9.04), Emacs is slowed 
down significantly.  Scrolling through a large text file take 1.7 times longer 
than with "ordinary" anti-aliasing alone.
