Currently Emacs has a restriction that its frames must be an integer
number of characters (in the default face) wide and high. So true
maximization is not possible.

The patched version of EmacsW32 (see EmacsWiki.org for more information) allows maximization. There are some minor glitches, but I have seen no big trouble with it.
