local variables in indirect buffers

From: Bill Lytton
Subject: local variables in indirect buffers
Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2006 13:33:48 -0400

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!
Please write in English, because the Emacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

Your bug report will be posted to the address@hidden mailing list,
and to the gnu.emacs.bug news group.

In GNU Emacs 21.4.1 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2006-03-07 on hs20-bc1-6.build.redhat.com
configured using `configure --build=i386-redhat-linux --host=i386-redhat-linux
--target=i386-redhat-linux-gnu --program-prefix= --prefix=/usr
--exec-prefix=/usr --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin --sysconfdir=/etc
--datadir=/usr/share --includedir=/usr/include --libdir=/usr/lib
--libexecdir=/usr/libexec --localstatedir=/var --sharedstatedir=/usr/com
--mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --with-pop --with-sound'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

According to the info page:
"But in all other respects, the indirect
buffer and its base buffer are completely separate. They have
different names, different values of point, different narrowing,
different markers, different major modes, and different local variables."

I am unable to get a different local variable value in the indirect buffer:

(defvar bb 1 "a")
(make-variable-buffer-local bb)
(defun faa () (interactive) (setq bb current-prefix-arg))

^x4c to clone and indirect buffer of my current buffer

I then used (faa) interactively with different prefix args to reset bb in the 2
buffers

^hv "bb" then showed that local var in both was now equal to the most recently
set value
