I can't reproduce it after doing a new cvs update, so it looks like whatever was going wrong has already been fixed. It was reliably reproducible before the update using -j2 on a dual-processor PowerPC Mac.
I'll remember in future to include a build transcript if I have to report this kind of bug again.
