Emacs built with gcc >=3.3 on Sparc Solaris dumps at exit

Subject: Emacs built with gcc >=3.3 on Sparc Solaris dumps at exit

Dear Emacs maintainers:

I recently downloaded and built Emacs 21.3 on Solaris. With gcc-3.3.2
(also 3.4.2), it built fine, except that Emacs segfaulted on exit
(both during the build process and after installation). That is,
Emacs would work fine up until I executed save-buffers-kill-emacs
(^X^C), at which point it would segfault in __do_global_dtors_aux.

Recompiling with -O2 --no-strict-aliasing did not help, but when I rebuilt
Emacs with gcc-2.95.2, the problem went away (and this is the
workaround I am using as a result).

Yes, I know: it could be a GCC problem. However, gcc-3.4.2
gives the same result, and I am inclined to think that this is more
likely to be a problem with a little dicey C somewhere in Emacs that gets
handled differently by 2.95.2 than by 3.x.

Details:
