[21.3] Dired listing is not kept in sync (e.g. after M)

In GNU Emacs 21.3.1 (i386-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2004-08-03 on raven, modified by Debian

If file modes are changed in Dired buffer, the listing is not kept in synch
with the rest of the lines. See the misplaced day, month etc after
"M" command above ntp.keys

  -rw-r--r--   1 root root     2898 Oct 12 20:02 ntp.conf
  -rw-r--r--  1 root root 0 Oct 12 20:06 ntp.keys

Only after "g" to get new listing this is restored to:

  -rw-r--r--   1 root root     2898 Oct 12 20:02 ntp.conf
  -rw-r--r--   1 root root        0 Oct 12 20:06 ntp.keys

Since diredt modifies the layout of line after M, by displaying
the new permissions, it shoudl also preserve the whole line.
