changing face color turns off bold

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

In X-windows with "emacs -q" I opened a new buffer, did M-x text-mode, typed 

dddddffffgggggred     <--- i typed this
12345678901234567     <--- for reference purposes

then I selected the region 5-10, i chose the menu Edit, text properties, 
foreground color, other  then enterd "red" <RET>.
The region turned red.
Next I selected the same region and  i chose the menu Edit, text properties, 
face, bold.
The region turned bold but lost the red color.
I expected the region to be both red and bold.
I did the same procedure in Emacs 20.7 and the region was both red and bold.
