"ESC p runs the command previous-history-element" OK, but might it be
smart to skip the previous history element if it is the same as the
current history element, as a new option on by default.
For instance, I did 20 M-x compile's in a row. Now after hitting C-x
ESC ESC I would need 20 ESC p's to get past all that to reach
something interesting.
[Wonder what bash does about this with C-p.]
