ediff-buffers doesn't work on windows XP

hi there,

i noticed that on windows XP, emacs (version 21, 20.7, 20.4)
ediff-buffers doesn't work anymore. it always returns 0 difference. 
ediff (ediff-files) still works though. anybody has any clus? thanx in
advance.
