minibuffer doesn't retract

start emacs -q and in the scratch buffer load the kill ring with three
lines of text

C-p C-p C-p C-p C-k C-k C-k C-k C-k C-k 

now in the minibuffer place those 3 lines

<escape> ! C-y

now clear them away

C-w

notice how the minibuffer doesn't retract, but stays stretched 3 lines
tall, only to retract when we are through there.  True, no big deal,
but, you know, it's like those sports pants with the stale elastic
bands...
