No problem.  Once you allow some form of \* to pass the *, I will [of
course, as usual, as you never know how many layers you are talking
thru] experiment with \* \\* \\\*, whatever, to see which one does
what I want.  This is still much better than 'huh? who hardwired the *
with no possibility of escaping it?  how could this be?'
