VC -vs- dired

I'm using GNU Emacs 20.5.

I brought up a CVS working directory in dired.  I made a new
directory, which I then wanted to `cvs add'.  I thought maybe `C-x v
i' would work to add the directory (or file) under point.  However, it
didn't.

I think this would be a useful addition to dired.

I tried "dired under VC", but it is very slow to start with a remote
CVS repository.  Also, I couldn't find a way to `cvs add' my new
directory with dired-under-vc.
