After a brief look at the Diary info page, John Q. User tries
ESC x diary
result: "You don't have a diary file!"
Well, wouldn't it be nice if it asked John "Shall I create one for
you? y n"

OK, anyways John goes back to the info page and sees
   Once you have created a `~/diary' file,....

so he does
$ touch diary
ESC x diary
again, something not pretty happens [visual bell...]

[apparently one must enter only via ESC calendar to not get en error
in this case of 0 byte ~/diary] well, a courtesy minibuffer message is
again in order here, to advise the user at this point...
