It also seems to be part of NetBSD libc, and hopefully the other BSD
flavours as well. I'll try a fresh compile on AIX and Solaris tonight

Someone claimed elsewhere that the built-in threading in AIX 4.2 (which is
what I run) is a little broken and the built-in threading in Solaris 2.5.1
(also what I have access to) is badly broken. I don't know, but in that
case, threading in Solaris 7 is just as broken as it was in 2.5. I'll see
to what extent I'm able to run this.
