I didn't know GNU Chess 1 was even in circulation any more. That was written about 17 years ago by me and I wanted to get it out of circulation which is why John Stanback's program became GNU Chess 2 through 4. However, these became pedantically unreadable and unmaintainable and non-valuable from an educational point of view so GNU Chess 5 by Chua Kong Sian became the new reality. I urge you to obtain it from www.gnu.org/software/chess/chess.html Strength depends upon your machine's speed. Certainly with modern PC's you will find GNU Chess 5 is a master but beyond that I don't want to estimate rating. For rating estimates, visit the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS). --Stuart > > From: "Lon" <address@hidden> > Date: 2002/12/23 Mon PM 03:29:14 EST > To: address@hidden > Subject: GNU chess version 1.2 - QUESTION > > hello. > > i'm computer illiterate, relatively speaking. so if someone can respond to my > following question, it'll have to be in lay terms. > > what's the approximate range of strenths ("ratings") of the > 1.2 version of the GNU chess software, from the fastest to the slowest game > play ? > > i've been getting my butt kicked regularly and i generally hold my own > against "expert" level humans. > > thanks very much to whomever responds. the GNU project seems like a good > thing. > > sincerely, lon > > _______________________________________________ > Bug-gnu-chess mailing list > address@hidden > http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gnu-chess > >
hello.
i'm computer illiterate, relatively speaking. so if
someone can respond to my following question, it'll have to be in lay
terms.
what's the approximate range of strenths
("ratings") of the
1.2 version of the GNU chess software, from the
fastest to the slowest game play ?
i've been getting my butt kicked regularly and i
generally hold my own against "expert" level humans.
thanks very much to whomever responds. the GNU
project seems like a good thing.
sincerely, lon
