Hi -- you are fully two versions out-of-date!
Please connect to http://www.gnu.org/sotware/chess/chess.html and
obtain the latest. Then use www.google.com to search for "winboard" at
Tim Mann's website. Use that to run gnu chess and you'll have an improvement.

My name is Louis (Lou) Vermeersch. I am using your programme GNU Chess
3.21 for Windows. My curiosity was piqued by a warning before each game
that the book of openings is not present. I'm a very weak player but enjoy
the game. I learned the game many years ago by using 'opening moves' from
chess books to start each game on a rational footing. How does one obtain
the 'opening moves' referred to in the programme?
Thank you very much for the programme.
Lou
