Hi,

I've been adding various filtering rules to the GNU Chess
mailing lists to stem the tide of spam, viruses, and virus
notifications. It is an uphill struggle but I am stopping the
majority of them (honest). I have dropped in a check for
"Mdaemon Warnings", so expect less warning in future.

I've been testing out some strength improvements for GNU Chess
5.05, which seem to solve more studies, but hasn't moved the
rating on FICS significantly.

The server I use for the "nextgnu" account on FICS
(freechess.org) is moving from a Cyrix 166 MHz to a Pentium III
300 MHz, which is alledgedly a doubling of CPU performance. Urm
so far it hasn't helped either :(

Knighttour (probably info on www.knighttour.org somewhere) is
starting a project to write a new Chess Server under a free
software licence. I've voted for the Affero GPL licence, which
is a FSF approved variant of the GPL to avoid hoarding of code
in ASP type scenarios (FICSs' own code is under the GPL, but no
one had fed improvements back for a few years AFAIK).

 Simon
