If the source code is closely based on the GNU Chess code, then
you may be obliged to put the Java version under the GPL, which
it sounds like you plan to do anyway. You should acknowledge the
copyrights and/or contributions of the original authors.

Other than that GNU Chess is free software, the whole purpose of
the current licence is so that other programmers can freely
borrow ideas, or modify the original code as they see fit.

There are other Free Java based Chess playing programs around,
and chess playing applets, so depending what you expect from the
project you may find what you need is already available.
