this is covered in the latest GNU chess FAQ - this problem with
version 5 has only been reported on some versions of Solaris and
xboard. An attempted fix is in 5.03beta, but I'll have a look at
Tim's documentation.
Michael, can you try 5.03beta?

PS: gnuchessx was part of GNU chess 4 and is no longer
supported, I assume you meant "gnuchess" in the original report.
