OS X (10.2.6) install errors

Subject: OS X (10.2.6) install errors

Im trying to install GMP on my Powermac, (darwin6.6).  I ran through the .pdf install instructions, i did the fallowing

> ./configure
////a bunch of stuff spit out/////

> make
////a bunch of stuff spit out/////

> make check
////a bunch of stuff spit out/////

> make install
////a bunch of stuff spit out/////
/usr/bin/install: /usr/local/lib/libgmp.3.3.2.dylib: Permission denied
make[2]: *** [install-libLTLIBRARIES] Error 71
make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1

i am new to this unix stuff, so i dont know how to fix problem....
if i did something wrong let me know....
