I think I'd rather improve the test to find an nm that can do what we
need. Normally it should exist, and the test already does a search
for an nm that can be put into BSD format.

C and C++ matching is discussed under CXX in the Build Options
section.

The plan, eventually, would be to have configure check that CC and CXX
can work together. Perhaps even to search for a CXX that can work
with CC, and try some flags to put it in the right ABI.

But until that happens we've gone with an explicit --enable-cxx so
hopefully anyone using that will have read the notes on it in the
manual.
