It does more than 1 of course, it's just 1 in the last directory!

Just to make three tiny files with those fragments of code and put
them through m4 (one at a time) to see if any of them also provoke the
caron.

If we've got something bad in our macros then we want to fix them, or
if your m4 is somehow evil then we might like to detect that in the
configure script.
