No. This is nothing special. This is just sockets (THE communication mechanism 
under Unices). I would be very glad to help you, if someone give me some ssh 
access to an OS X machine. Unfortunately, your organization is heavily 
firewalled (it _should_ be), so I am still waiting for some less firewalled 
person who can supply me with ssh access.

If they can get someone to help us make the GIFT work on OS X.

For info: could you send me the content of outfile.txt after doing:

man socket -S7 > outfile.txt

outfile.txt should contain the answer (it does so under GNU/Linux)
