Issue with msgfmt breaking VIM

I'm reaching out because I am trying to install the latest version of VIM with a slightly different configuration but when I compile it, exits with the following error:

msgfmt --desktop -d . --template gvim.desktop.in -o tmp_gvim.desktop
msgfmt: Cannot convert from "ISO-8859-1" to "UTF-8". msgfmt relies on iconv(). This version was built without iconv().
make[2]: *** [gvim.desktop] Error 1
make[1]: *** [languages] Error 2
make: *** [install] Error 2

I opened this issue on the VIM side but they couldn't think of a workaround and thought it would only be fixable by GNU. Is this something you'd be willing to fix (or can you think of a workaround)?
