Perhaps you are using newer NVidia kernel driver?  I've just searched on
the web and found similar bugs reported on Gentoo's Bugzilla:

  Bug 487782 - =sys-apps/findutils-4.5.12 - Hangs at "configure: checking for 
working sleep..." 

  Bug 487700 - various packages hang/super slow during configure (checking 
sleep/re_compile_pattern/etc...) as they hit futexes 

  Bug 487558 - x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-? with kernel ? and CONFIG_? - 
processes are kept waiting
