[bug-gettext] Possible solutions for .po file conflicts

Hello,

Currently we have some problems using gettext in some GNOME modules:
We have .po file conflicts, where building causes local changes that
conflict with updates from translators.
See [1] for more info about the problem.
Ryan Lortie found a workaround [2] for the issue but Im wondering if
there is a better solution for this
