newbie gdbserver question

I'm sure this is an old old problem, but I'm new at this and can't
find the answer in any FAQ, so I'm posting here. Please be gentle!
;-)
I'm running gdbserver on a redhat server. From a redhat client, I
invoke gdb and do the following:
(gdb) target remote linuxtarget:1234
linuxtarget:1234: Success.
(gdb) Quit
(gdb)
It says "success", but this is bogus. It never touches the gdbserver.
In fact, "linuxtarget" doesn't even exist! Please tell me you've
seen this before.
