Thank you for the thorough review.
I'm not going to go through these point by point; instead I will update
the code as necessary. If you've noted inconsistencies, it's because
I'm inconsistent. I don't (or no longer) have the cycles to pay attention
to details of this kind, so such things slip in. I will try to correct
them according to your list.

I added that after a user tried to put literal NUL bytes into his awk
program source. That was some years ago, so PEBKAC probably can come out.
