Forget it. It works. Just... slow. I sent the 1st mail re. funcsub more as a feature request.
More funcy funcs (in C) is a good thing for FUTURE  awk

This sounds very complicated.  Is it possible for you to supply a very small
sample of the input you have and the output that you want?  Maybe then
somebody will have a better idea about how to implement this.
