Are you using gnu awk (gawk)? If so, what do you see when you run
gawk --version? I don't think gawk has any such length limits.
For example, on my Linux system, I see:
bash-4.2$ gawk --version
GNU Awk 4.1.0, API: 1.0 (GNU MPFR 3.1.1, GNU MP 5.1.1)

If your problem is with gawk, please provide an example which
triggers the error.
