Details:

I must be doing something wrong, findutils-4.4.2 is not new and I find no such
complaint regarding find/findutils on the Web.

This happens with both a 4.4.2 binary from the GNU/Linux distribution and a
fresh compile of findutils-4.4.2.tar.gz obtained from ftp.gnu.org.

The find(1) manpage supplies in the EXAMPLES section the example

$ find . -type f -exec file '{}'\;
find: missing argument to `-exec'

It happens on three different hosts (all Slackware 14.1) with Linux kernel
versions 3.10.17, 3.15.10 and 3.17.1 respectively, and whether the user has a
.bash_profile or not.

As noted in the subject line, it's not only -exec that fails in this way.
