Nothing is stopping you from writing your own software that behaves the
way you want.  But I don't see anything in your report that points out
anything wrong with either GNU coreutils or GNU findutils with regards
to attempting to delete a directory with a trailing "." as the final
component, and then correctly reporting the failure to you.
