Thanks, but it seems that your simplified 'red' fails when $0 does not contain a slash:

$ sh red.orig -V
GNU ed 1.18
[...]
$ sh red.new -V
red.new: line 2: /tmp/red.new/ed: Not a directory
red.new: line 2: exec: /tmp/red.new/ed: cannot execute: Not a directory
