He went to seek a breath ofair in the garden. I admit that the weakness which Julien displays in this monologuegives me a poor opinion of him. The onething I must insist on is that you do not speak to him. In these unfortunate circumstances heventured to write to M. This house is paved with enemies; think of the passionate hatred thatElisa has for me. Julien read in his features the uneasiness of a man in cruel torment. He had made out the wife of thecollector who sang so well. Shortly before the dinner bell sounded, Julien returned with thechildren. He is not a wise creature, swayedby reason. The pair ofrooms which he had taken were littered with his books. On the contrary, this language amusedthem by its unfamiliarity; they laughed at it. You never payattention to what is reasonable; how should you have any knowledge? When willthese fools tire of listening to this Biblical language, of which theyunderstand nothing? He, without opening it,gazed at his wife with madness in his eyes. Who would have said that with my rank, my fortune, myCrosses, I should one day regret it? She congratulated herself on the step she had taken. A man of family, who respects his rank as I do, isalways hated by plebeians. My wife loves her children,it will all come to them in the end. This tendency wasincreased by the sight of the Governors house. No, he cried, I shallcertainly not part with my wife, she is too useful to me.
